House Training

House training your puppy

F
No puppy is completely house trained before they leave for their forever home,
but RedTeddy puppies are well on their way.

All training should be done with praise and encouragement, never punishment.

While they are under four weeks, our pups get basic house training: wee wee pads near the entrance to their den to encourage going in a specific area. Around 3-4 weeks, the pups move to an indoor area next to the kitchen, with a doggy door to the outside play area. As they get bigger, they learn to climb in and out of the doggy door by watching the older dogs come and go. When the weather is warm enough, pups spend more and more time outside to encourage house training, and because it is fun! This outdoors training is significant in reducing the time it will take new owners to completely house train their puppy.

We like the training podcast School For The Dogs Podcast - Dog Training & Animal Behavior with Annie Grossman
Here is a link to one of her podcasts about guarding behavior in puppies and what to do about it: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/school-for-the-dogs-podcast-dog-training-animal/id1355439730

Time and effort taken in the first few days, weeks, and months will make house training take less time overall and will dramatically reduce mistakes in the future! We recommend crating overnight with the last water around 6pm and the last walk 9- 10pm. Take your pup out of his/her crate early, around 6am, and carry your pup directly to where you want them to eliminate. Reward with treats and praise. Next, feed your puppy breakfast, and let him/her play outside or go on a fun walk with you. If they did not poop before breakfast, they may on the walk. Another option is to walk your pup first, before breakfast.

Keep your pup close to you whenever he/she is in the house and watch for signs of sniffing, circling, or suddenly looking for an out of the way place.. As soon as you see any signs, immediately pick your pup up and take him/her out to the place to "go."

BOARD & TRAIN
You may want our trainer to begin training your puppy, or maybe you cannot pick up your puppy during the optimal time at eight weeks. In either case, Board & Train is an excellent option!
  • Board & Train begins the first day after your puppy turns eight weeks. Reservations can be from one day all the way to three weeks, and include food, training treats and one-on-one puppy school. As puppies grow up they have increasing energy and ability in these important early weeks which means longer and more frequent training. The daily fee for B&T is, for the first week, $50 per day, week two is $60 per day and week three is $70/day.
  • Board & Train starts with important skills, using only positive reinforcement, praise and treats. Puppies work on skills including crate training, sit-come-stay, house training, getting used to a leash, and more. Every puppy is different, but none will master these skills completely at their young age: Board & Train gives them a foundation.
  • Board & Train families receive weekly texts on interactions with your puppy, and our K-9 specialist will take an additional time during puppy pick up to show off your puppies accomplishments, demonstrating how to get the best out of your puppy using the commands, body language and treats they are used to.
  • During the Covid-19 quarantine/until further notice, the individual family training session will be done by phone, video clips, or facetime, etc., and not in person.
In the video below, professional dog trainer, Chet Womach, teaches a dog to go to its designated dog bed on command, without punishments or raising his voice. More of Chet's videos are available at dogtrainingsecret.com
KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR DOG - even your RedTeddy Poodle who comes to you looking deeply into your eyes, with every intent of doing exactly what you want, even our puppies
REALLY, REALLY (seriously) DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH (OR SPANISH, FRENCH, URDU...)

Check out this dog training video below (also with professional trainer, Chet Womach), which, for reasons that will be come crystal clear, doesn't have any dogs in it! BUT, it's great for first time dog owners, and for those of us (including us at RedTeddy) who still, even after years and years of talking to their dogs, have not gotten the memo! This brief clip will put you in the right frame of mind for thinking about how your puppy thinks, so that you will be able to communicate and train him or her more easily.

There are numerous dog trainers out there, and even online. Chet Womach's videos are worth checking out at https://thedogtrainingsecret.com  or training a puppy
(This is NOT an affiliate link. We don't get anything by recommending Chet. It's just good stuff! ;)
The above video is from Womach's days as a parrot trainer, but again, it's relevant! He works with a clicker to "clicker train" people! It works!!

RedTeddy Poodles are Special.
They are extremely bright. They are easy to train as long as you are able to spend the energy to get them on the right path.  They LOVE their people, their cats, babies, children, and they fit in well with other family pets. The time they spend with YOU is the highlight of their day, everyday, but they can stay at home alone without destroying the furniture as long as they are not normally left alone more than a few hours a day. Like all dogs, RedTeddys need consistent daily exercise.

We suggest that all new owners take the time to read or listen to one of our recommended dog training books, either Ian Dunbar's 'Before and After Bringing Home Your Puppy', full of good advice presented with good humor, from the puppies point of view, and easy to put into practice. We also love
'Decoding your dog: the ultimate experts explain common dog behaviors and reveal how to prevent or change unwanted ones' before bringing home the new puppy. This book will explain house training, crate training, and almost all facets of dog ownership. It is written by licensed veterinarians who are also certified dog behaviorists. It is full of common sense, or not so common sense around dogs!
